What is the Wilks score?

The Wilks formula, created by Robert Wilks, was for decades the standard way to compare powerlifters of different bodyweights, and the IPF used it for best-lifter awards until it moved to its own formulas (IPF GL points since 2020). It is still widely quoted and used by some federations.

The formulas

Wilks = total × 500 / (a + b·BW + c·BW² + d·BW³ + e·BW⁴ + f·BW⁵), with separate coefficients for men and women (BW in kilograms).

Wilks2020 is a 2020 re-fit of the same polynomial on newer competition data, with a numerator of 600 instead of 500, so its scores are not directly comparable to classic Wilks.

Coefficients and bodyweight limits (men 40–201.9 kg, women 26.51–154.53 kg for Wilks; 40–200.95 kg and 40–150.95 kg for Wilks2020) follow OpenPowerlifting. Example: a 100 kg man with a 1000 kg total scores about 608.6 Wilks.
